Leading with optimism (Canadian Immigrant)
Sobhana Jaya-Madhavan likes to call herself an optimist. Chatting in a coffee shop at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, B.C., Jaya-Madhavan speaks candidly about life, work and her immigration journey to Canada — which has led her to her current position as the university’s associate vice-president of external relations. “Life will always have ups and downs, irrespective if you move to a foreign country or not,” she says. “And I’m an optimist by nature. So, if there’s a problem, there must be a solution. It’s up to each of us to get up, roll up our sleeves and get to work.” And that’s exactly what she did. Read more ...
Spice goddess (Canadian Immigrant)
It helps that she’s extremely photogenic, but there’s more to TV chef Bal Arneson than just a pretty face. Her caramel-coloured eyes reflect an unapologetic determination to live life her way, and that more than her good looks — or even her cooking skills — is what got her from a bad, arranged marriage into the spotlight. Today, she is one of Canada’s best-known celebrity chefs, as Food Network Canada’s Spice Goddess, and a best-selling author of two cookbooks Everyday Indian and Bal's Quick and Healthy Indian, with a third on the way this spring, called Bal’s Spice Kitchen. Romancing the numbers (CGA Magazine)
Traveling on business to B.C.'s Queen Charlotte Islands, Crystal Selwyn, a tax auditor with Revenue Canada, had her controlled existence shattered when the seaplane she had chartered crashed into the Pacific. Although frantic about the loss of her audit bag, Selwyn managed to swim to the desolate shore, dragging the unconscious pilot, Jesse, along with her. The CGA's cool reserve then received another blow when she found herself falling in love, and into bed, with the burly aviator while trying to find their way back to civilization. Read more ...

Canadian Immigrant Fair
In Metro Vancouver, 25,000 immigrants landed between January and August 2018, according to data from Immigrant, Refugees, Citizenship Canada. That’s the majority of the 32,000 who landed in the entire province of B.C. during that time period. And many more thousands come on temporary work permits, as refugees or as international students in hopes of staying permanently one day. Some may be fleeing war, while others are seeking new opportunities and a better life. But they all have one thing in common: they need information after they arrive to help them in their immigration journey. That’s where the Canadian Immigrant Fair, presented by Canadian Immigrant magazine in association with Public Mobile, comes in. Read more ...

Summer is almost here, and this year you’ve decided that Hawaii can wait—this is the summer of the home reno-cation! Maybe updating your basement into a cosy, liveable space is the ambitious DIY plan on the agenda. Think of the possibilities—home office, personal yoga studio or suite for that 20-something child who just won’t move out. It could even be transformed into a great little mortgage helper down the road. From the brave DIYer’s point of view, it won’t be that hard to do. All the space needs is a little drywall, some cheery coats of paint and some updated flooring (vinyl planks would be fab!). “I can do that,” you think to yourself. Read more ...
Foster Naturals
Are you on the search for effective, non-toxic, organic and natural products for your family and home that are actually what they claim to be? We get it. That’s exactly how Foster Naturals was born. What started out as a simple search for natural, organic, eco friendly products that we could trust turned into an exciting journey that led us to develop our own line of products. Our journey provided us with a deeper level of awareness that our life as consumers needed to change. We became educated about the toxic ingredients in the products we were using daily, some even labelled natural or organic, and the damage they were doing to us and our planet. Read more ...
